Some people already might know that I am organizing some English study and social events with my best friend, Paul and other organizers on the weekend.

We basically use some bars for the events, and they are so helpful. However, it is bar… so they sometimes so strict for the ID check… When you go to a bar in Australia, you can see this kind of sign.

There are some restriction in Australia

In Australia, the legal drinking and smoking age is 18 years old (By the way, the legal drinking and smoking age is 20 years old). I am just curious… How old is it in other countries???

“Reference : Wikipedia

It is from Wikipedia, so I am not sure it is correct or not though… I think that some people start drinking or smoking when they are very young regardless of the legal age… It is a common thing in the world lol

By the ways, you might have seen this sign as well. If you look under 25 years old, the bar staff might ask you show your ID. Basically, many Asian people look young, so they might be asked to show ID often. I want to explain about some rules at the bar here. Some people might not know about them, so if it is helpful for you, I am very happy.

Some advice about bar rules

1 : Basically, you can not use student card, the copy of passport as your ID at bar. Sometime, international driver’s license is also not accepted. Definitely, ” Passport” , “Photo Card”, ” Australian driver’s license” are available as your ID.

If you are interested in making a “Photo Card”, I wrote an article, so I hope that it is helpful.

How to make a Photo Card (You can use it as your ID in NSW)

2 : You can not stay at bar if you are asked to show your ID even if you order a soft drink. You are forced to leave. ” The bar has to pay fine if police comes when you are there, and you also has to pay fine”.

3 : If security staff are standing in front of the entrance ( You often see the security staff in the evening on the weekends), You are asked to show your ID to get into the bar. It is same when you go to karaoke. However, some Asian restaurants usually don’t ask you to show your ID to buy alcohol.

4 : Sometimes, even you don’t order drink, a staff might come to ask you to show your ID.

5 : In the case you are with your parents( I am not sure about relatives), you can stay at bar even you are under 18 years old.

On our website, we always show the signs and comments to bring their ID, so please bring your ID when you come to our events in the case bar staff ask you to show your ID. If you look young and staff don’t ask you to show your ID, it is just lucky.

When you go to bar by yourself, sometimes, you need to be careful. Sometimes, people come to bar to just pick up girls (could be boys?) or come there for sexual reason. Some people could be nice people, but I think that it is better to be careful if a stranger comes to you at bar. Our events are very organized, so you can enjoy our events in safe.

I heard that sometimes, people try to put a drug in your drink and try to take you hotel or somewhere, so if you are from safe countries, please be careful.

You need to put your properties with the range of your sight. It is non-sense if your put your properties on the chairs to keep your seats at the restaurants or bars. I strongly recommend you not to put your properties behind your seat. Somebody might steal your properties.

Australia is one of the safest countries in the world, but not as safe as Japan. Japan is too safe… I am not sure about the safety level of Australia comparing to your countries. But anyways, it is better not to let your guard down all the time.

This article in Japanese is here.
